My name is Lori Rotterman, vice president of the Dayton Metro Library Staff Association, and it is in that capacity which I speak to you today.
We would first like to thank the director, Mr. Kambitsch, and the Board President, Ms. Merz, for their attendance at our recent Staff Association meeting to discuss the facilities planning process. We appreciate that they were willing to give up time on a Sunday to meet with us.
We had conducted a survey of our members prior to our meeting, following the presentations the director made to staff over the last few weeks. One of the questions asked was: Based on what you know right now, do you support the Library's facilities plan? The results were 34% yes, 23% no, and 42% not sure.
We also asked an open-ended question: Tell us your thoughts on the facilities plan, to which we got over 60 responses. These comments, as well as questions from the meeting which did not get asked due to time restraints, are being compiled and grouped by topic, and will be forwarded to Mr. Kambitsch for his response, which we will then distribute to our membership.
After our guests left the meeting, there was a free ranging discussion of the topics and concerns. We were not able to come to a group consensus on the union’s position regarding the plan, largely due to the fact a large number of our members were still “not sure” and felt that many questions had not been answered yet. The only conclusion reached was that we, as an organization, are going to abstain from taking a position until after our next general membership meeting, which will most likely be in July.
Thank you for the opportunity to address you today.
