Library Building Plan

A week ago yesterday, Tim Kambitsch came to the DMLSA Executive Council meeting and discussed the building plan with us. Tim was very informative, and very open with respect to the plan. We left the meeting with a few impressions:

  • Tim and the Board have an innovative vision for the future of libraries in Dayton
  • They are passionate about their visionary plan
  • They have invested considerable effort into their plan so far

Ultimately, we were impressed with the plan, though not entirely convinced. But of this, we are certain: the plan has appreciable merit. That is to say, it deserves a fair and open-minded reception.

There are still many questions and concerns that we have with the plan. Most of us (the Exec Council) are still considering where we fall on the plan, but we were positively influenced by Tim’s presentation.

So this is a quick note to ask you all to take two steps:

  • Tim sent out the planned times and locations of his meetings. We encourage you to attend these meetings with an open mind. You will likely be impressed with the work they have done. And you may be influenced...or not. But give it an open-minded listen.
  • Come to the Feb 12th meeting. There, we will hear from Tim and/or a Board member, and then, after they leave, we will hold an open discussion among ourselves. Again, please come with an open mind.

This is an issue that is complex. It is an issue with strong and valid points on each side. It is also an issue where the library will ask us, as a union, to support them. Please attend Tim’s meetings, and then come to our Feb 12th meeting to discuss our position.
